Abstract

In Indonesia, the manufacturing industry provides a positive contribution to economic growth, such as contributing to the national GDP by 20%. However, currently, the manufacturing industry has to deal with a high level of competitiveness which makes it must accentuate the value to the customers. One of the ways to increase productivity is by eliminating the wastefulness that occurs in the process of production. PT Poly Sejahtera Indah is a manufacturing company that produces mining ropes which in the process of its production, discovered that there has been an activity of waste that resulted in the rise of the production time cycle. This research aims to understand and analyse the causes and offer proposed improvements over wastage that occurred. The method employed was lean manufacturing, with mapping value stream, as well as VALSAT, and VSM tools as the approaches. This research is problem-solving research with quantitative methods, as the data collection method is a questionnaire by interviewing 6 respondents in total. Based on the analysis of process activity mapping, shows the NVA activity using time with the largest percentage which is 54.6%, this indicates the company is inefficient, as to the assumption that implementing the proposed improvements could reduce the total time spent by the NVA activity from 54.6% to 9%. The conclusion of this study implies that all types of waste ever occurred during the production process, nonetheless, defect, overprocessing, and unnecessary motion occupies the top 3 levels. The causes of waste are dominated by miscommunication and human error, also companies that still use manual systems to exchange information. Thus, the proposed improvement from The Author was emphasized to reduce and eliminate non-value adding activities and to adopt electronically time-saving systems that could save time.
