Abstract

US$ s.d. 90,82 US$ per barel.

This study proposes the Fisher's-z distribution and three models, namely the Fisher's-z Mixture Autoregressive (ZMAR), the mixture of ZMAR, and Fisher's-z Markov Switching Autoregressive (ZMSAR) models. The method used to estimate the parameters of the proposed model is the Bayesian method, using the Hamiltonian Monte Carlo (HMC) algorithm. The Fisher's-z distribution is an extension of the standard Fisher's-z distribution, by adding the location parameter μ and the scale parameter σ to the standard Fisher's-z distribution. The ZMAR model is a development of the Gaussian MAR (GMAR) model, which uses the Fisher's-z distribution as the error term for each component. The mixture of the ZMAR model is a development of the ZMAR model, by combining several potential ZMAR models using the mixture method. While the ZMSAR model is a development of the ZMAR model, by changing the assumption of an independent component label S_t to a dependent one, which is influenced by S_(t-1). The advantages of these three models over the GMAR model are that the three models are better at modeling fat-tailed data. Compared to the Gaussian MSAR (GMSAR) model, the ZMSAR model is better at detecting the occurrence of structural breaks or label switching. To determine the performance of the proposed model, three simulation studies were carried out. The results of the simulation study on the ZMAR model show that the GMAR model has better performance than both the ZMAR and Student's t MAR (TMAR) if it fulfills three conditions. The three conditions are the data generated from the ZMAR model where all the components are symmetrical, the excess unconditional kurtosis is close to the zero value, and the difference of the intercept between the components is quite small. While in other conditions, the ZMAR model is the best and is followed by the TMAR model. The results of the simulation study on the mixture of ZMAR model show that the mixture of ZMAR model has better performance than the ZMAR model when the data is generated from the mixture of ZMAR model which has a fairly large excess unconditional kurtosis. When the value of excess unconditional kurtosis is small, the ZMAR model has better performance than the mixture of the ZMAR model. The results of the simulation study on the ZMSAR model show that the ZMSAR model has the best performance when the data is generated from the ZMSAR model which has different transition matrix elements in each row. However, if the data is generated from the ZMSAR model which has the same transition matrix elements in each row, then the ZMAR, GMAR, or mixture of ZMAR_GMAR models have better performance than the ZMSAR model. Furthermore, the model is used to predict the price of Sumatran Light Crude (SLC), and it is found that the ZMSAR model is better than the ZMAR model, the mixture of ZMAR, and GMSAR model. Using the Iterated Multi-Step (IMS) method and the ZMSAR model, the forecast for 90 percent of the Highest Posterior Density Interval (HPDI) of SLC prices in December 2021 is estimated to be in state 1, namely the SLC price tends to increase with a price range of 31.74 US$ to 90.82 US$ per barrel. As a comparison, this study also performed forecasting using a combination of the IMS method and the Direct Multi-Step (DMS) method. Using the combined method for the ZMSAR model, the forecast for 90 percent of HPDI SLC prices in December 2021 is estimated that the model is in state 3, namely the SLC price tends to increase with a forecast of 90 percent of HPDI being in the range of 46.76 US$ to 73.82 US$ per barrel and the forecast for 95 percent HPDI is in the range of 43.39 US$ to 75.88 US$ per barrel.
