Abstract

A lathe is a machine tool used to cut and eat the workpiece by a tool that is moved translationally with the rotary axis of the worktable. One of the processes on a lathe is turning. Turning is a machining process usually done on a lathe where the single-edged chisel on the lathe moves to eat the rotating workpiece. In this case, the single-edged chisel is the cutting motion, and the translational motion of the chisel is motion eating. Every mechanical equipment and machine, in general, will experience vibration during the turning process. This vibration effect also affects the performance of turning tools in reducing material, causes wear on machine parts and reduces cutting accuracy performance. Nevertheless, it can be minimized in specific ways, such as adding a dynamic vibration absorber to the lathe cutting tool.
This final project research is to design DVA with insert and layer rubber and mass with variations in a cylinder and rectangular shape on the nose tool in the turning tool. In this study, the authors designed three variations of DVA shape with two of the three masses being the same along with three different insert variations, two inserts following the shape of the metal mass, and one insert in the form of a layer as a coating on the right and left sides of the DVA mass surface. The machining variations used include variations in spindle rotation (N), Dept of cut (D), with one fixed machining variable, operating frequency (ωc).
The results of the turning tool simulation obtained a vibration response in the operational frequency range of 367 Hz – 580 Hz with the most significant amplitude ratio in regular turning tools without DVA for the axial direction, and the most significant vibration response in the variation of DVA shape is cylindrical DVA for the tangential direction. Rectangular and rectangular DVA layers get a vibration response that is not much different in the specified operating frequency range. The greater the depth of cut and spindle rotation, the greater the vibration response of the turning tool with and without DVA. In this study, the most significant percentage of vibration reduction in turning tools with cylindrical DVA at an operational frequency of 500 Hz with a depth of cut of 0.4 mm is 71.40%, for a rectangular DVA of 81.81% at an operational frequency of 500 Hz with a spindle speed of 160 Rpm depth. Of cut 1.2 mm, and for the DVA rectangular layer, the results of the vibration reduction are 81.11% at an operational frequency of 500 Hz when the depth of cut is 1.2 mm. The ability of the percentage of vibration reduction obtained by each variation of the DVA form, the slightest ability is in the cylinder DVA of 66.35%. For DVA rectangular layer can reduce by 77.64%. The most considerable vibration reduction is rectangular DVA, which can reduce 78.66%. Turning tool DVA cylinder, DVA rectangular and rectangular layer are safe for use on various machining parameters but are very optimal at a frequency of 500 Hz with a spindle speed of 160 Rpm and a depth of cut 1.2 mm
