Abstract

Poor air quality is obtained from smoking habits that are still high. Cigarette smoke causes polluted air conditions and will affect human health. Cigarette smoke contains CO and CO2 levels of 3.2% and 13.8%, respectively. The solution to this problem is the application of high voltage technology using an Electrostatic Precipitator (ESP). The purpose of this study was to analyze the effect of different types of electrode models, to determine the percentage of reduction efficiency in CO and CO2 gas removal, and to determine the performance of Electrostatic Precipitator (ESP) in capturing CO and CO2 emissions in cigarette smoke. In this study, data were collected from cigarette smoke samples for 5 minutes and the samples were flowed for 10 minutes from the inlet tube to the ESP and to the outlet tube. This different type of discharge electrode has a very important role in ESP modeling because it functions to make neutral particles become negatively charged and are installed in the middle of each collecting electrode. The variations used are the type of electrode, the voltage of 15 kV and 25 kV, and the flow rate of air 4L/minute and 8L/minute. The results obtained are the ability of the Electrostatic Precipitator to reduce gas and the value of the efficiency of removing gas emissions contained in the cigarette smoke sample is the highest at a voltage of 25 kV and a discharge of 4L/minute, namely at the wire-to-plate type of CO gas at 61.23% and electrode type plate-to-plate CO2 gas by 86.64%. The performance of ESP based on the effect of differences in the shape of the discharge electrode with the influence of a certain discharge was quite good and obtained optimal results in the plate-to-plate type of CO2 gas sample testing
