Abstract

In the electrical system, arc flash phenomena often occur, which require analysis to ensure the safety of workers. Arc analysis was carried out to determine the category of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) against arc hazards to ensure the safety of workers in the field from exposure to emitted energy incidents. The arc analysis method commonly used in general uses the IEEE 1584-2002 standard to perform arc hazard analysis, which requires many parameters to determine the PPE category of each bus. So, if there are many buses, it will take time to choose the PPE category. Using the energy boundary curve method, determining the PPE category briefly and more simply by the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) 70E-2015 only requires a bus safety characteristic curve. The bus safety characteristic curve will be cut with the energy limit curve so that the required PPE category can be determined at the intersection of the two curves. The actual study on the simplification of arc analysis was carried out at PT. Pertamina RU VII Syarif Kasim. In the end, arc analysis using each bus's energy limit curve method can determine the PPE category, which is shorter and simpler than the standard IEEE 1584-2002 method. However, it creates a difference in the safe boundary distance (flash protection boundary) because the energy limit curve method does not consider the energy incident value and fault clearing time.
