Abstract

Shape memory alloy is an alloy that can return to its original shape after deformation. This is because the shape memory alloy has a shape memory effect. Cu-based shape memory alloy has the advantages of relatively cheap price and simple fabrication procedure. In this study, the alloy used was Cu-12,1Al-1,89Mn with the heat treatment given, namely homogenizing, annealing, solution treatment, and artificial aging. There are two variations of cooling media used, namely brine and water as well as variations in holding time in the artificial aging process, namely 30 minutes, 60 minutes and 90 minutes. Tests carried out to analyze the effect of the variables above are composition testing, X-Ray Diffraction (XRD) testing, metallographic testing, Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC) testing, hardness testing, and shape memory effect testing. The results of the XRD test showed that the β-Cu3Al phase formed in the alloy and metallographic testing showed the presence of a β'-Cu3Al twinned martensite structure which affected the shape memory properties of the alloy. Aquades and brine cooling media in the solution treatment process had no significant effect on the results of the microstructure, hardness and shape memory effect of the alloy. The hardness value after solution treatment was greater for the AQ850 specimen, which was 282 HV, and the shape memory effect was greater for the BR850, which was 65%. However, artificial aging treatment at 200⁰C for 90 minutes can change the microstructure of the alloy resulting in reverse martensite transformation resulting in a decrease in the shape memory properties of up to 50% and an increase in the hardness value up to 312 HV
