Abstract

Solid Polymer Electrolyte (SPE) produced from natural polymers with added salt has the potential to be developed. This study aims to develop SPE from corn starch with the addition of aluminum nitrate salt (Al(NO3)3) additives. The flexibility and toughness of SPE are maintained by the addition of glycerol (C3H8O3) plasticizer. SPE with aluminum nitrate salt concentration of 0%, 5%, 10%, 15% and 20% was made by solution casting technique, the highest conductivity was obtained σ = 1.76 x10-4 S/cm at a concentration of 20%. The XRD results show a more amorphous structure due to the intercalation of Al3+ cations into corn starch. The FTIR results show that the addition of aluminum nitrate salt changes the intensity of the O-H groups, revealing the emergence of a complex structure formation between the corn starch polymer chains and Al3+ ions from aluminum nitrate salts causing segmental motion in the polymer chains. The results of SEM photos show that the surface structure is lighter, there are cracks and the surface is uneven as the addition of salt indicates that the salt dissociates well with the polymer matrix. The TGA results showed an increase in the thermal stability up to twice of SPE with the addition of salt, up to 90OC. The BET test shows a microporous structure with a wider structure and a smaller specific volume of SPE indicating a greater amount of gas that can be absorbed. The CV test shows a reversible redox reaction electrochemical process with Vredoks = 0,13V. The results of this research can be used as a good reference for developing SPE on aluminum–ion batteries made from corn starch and aluminum nitrate salt
