Abstract

The phenomenon behind this design is the difficulty for patients to carry out dental health checks due to the Covid-19 pandemic. The problem that is often experienced by patients is dental caries, almost half of the world's coverage is cured by dental caries. Severe dental caries can impair quality of life, including difficulty eating and sleeping, and at an advanced stage can cause chronic systemic pain and infection. To overcome this phenomenon we need a tool that can detect the patient's dental health at a distance. In this final project a tool has been designed using the optical fluorescence method in saliva combined with an IoT (Internet of Things) device based on an ESP32 microcontroller. Saliva contains matrix metalloproteinases (MMP) enzymes which are closely related to tooth decay. The MMP enzyme was tested with curcumin (fluorescent properties) found in turmeric. Saliva mixed with curcumin (sample) is irradiated by UV light to produce fluorescence light. The fluorescence light was captured by a light spectrum sensor, namely AS 7262. The degree of tooth decay was observed from the fluorescence intensity. From the results of testing the tool obtained an accuracy of 30%. The use of these devices is expected to assist in early detection of dental caries and facilitate timely interventions, thus improving overall dental and oral health.
