Abstract

Patchouli plant is one of essential oil which important as Indonesia export commodity and contribute foreign exchange about 60% from total foreign exchange of essential oil. Production of patchouli oil that are still very potential to be developed in Indonesia. Generally, the distillation of essential oil from patchouli cablin benth still use conventional method such as hydrodistillation, steam-hydrodistillation, and steam distillation which takes a long time to produce essential oil with a good quality. Because of its, there was provided the method of essential oil extraction which more effective and efficient was microwave assisted extraction. From the methods of microwave assisted extraction, microwave hydrodistillation and solvent-free microwave extraction method is potential method for patchouli oil extraction. The purpose of this research is to compare the yield from the method of microwave hydrodistillation and solvent-free microwave extraction and to learn the optimal operating conditions for oil extraction Pogostemon cablin Benth by the method of microwave hydrodistillation and solvent-free microwave extraction which includes the microwave power, the ratio to the volume of solvent, the ratio to the volume of distiller, the condition of material, the size of material and the time of extraction. Except of its, this research is to compare the quality from the method of microwave hydrodistillation and solvent-free microwave extraction by standard of SNI 06-2385-2006 dan ISO 3757:2002(E).
Materials used in the study include fresh and dried patchouli leave. In the extraction with microwave hydrodistillation methods done on materials size was the whole leaves, half cut leaves, and chopped leaves, the microwave power 150, 300, 450, and 600 W, the ratio of raw material with a volume solvent was 0,3, 0,4, 0,5, dan 0,6 g/ml, and the extraction time for 180 minutes. In the extraction with solvent-free microwave extraction methods done on materials size was the whole leaves, half cut leaves, and chopped leaves, the microwave power 150, 300, 450, and 600 W, the ratio of raw material with a volume distiller was 0,06, 0,08, 0,10, dan 0,12 g/ml, and the extraction time for 90 minutes.
From the research results it can be seen that the extraction of patchouli oil using solvent-free microwave extraction method is produce yields higher when compared to the extraction is done with microwave hydrodistillation method. Optimal operating conditions for the extraction of fresh and dried patchouli leaves by using microwave hydrodistillation methods obtained when using microwave power 450 W, with chopped leaves, and the ratio of raw material with a volume solvent is 0,3 g/ml. Optimal operating conditions for the extraction of fresh patchouli leaves by using solvent-free microwave extraction methods obtained when using microwave power 300 W, with chopped leaves, and the ratio of raw material with a volume distiller is 0,06 g/ml. Optimal operating conditions for the extraction of dried patchouli leaves by using solvent-free microwave extraction methods obtained when using microwave power 450 W, with whole leaves, and the ratio of raw material with a volume distiller is 0,06 g/ml. Test for physical properties of patchouli oil showed that the essential oil obtained by using the microwave hydrodistillation and solvent-free microwave extraction methods have the same quality (density and solubility). While the test for the chemical properties of patchouli oil showed that the patchouli alcohol content obtained by solvent-free microwave extraction method has higher when compared with those obtained using the microwave hydrodistillation method. Test for physical and chemical properties of patchouli oil showed that the essential oil obtained by using the microwave hydrodistillation and solvent-free microwave extraction methods have compatible with SNI 06-2385-2006 dan ISO 3757 : 2002 (E)).
