Abstract

The accumulation of unwanted deposits on the surface of the heat exchanger is called fouling. The occurrence of salt deposition on the walls of the fluid flow process equipment, especially on the surface of heat transfer and the surface of the evaporator is a serious problem encountered in most industrial processes. Calcium carbonate is one of the precipitating constituents of the fouling which is a serious problem in most industrial processes involving salt water. One oil company in Indonesia costs about $ 6-7 million to replace the pipes on the geothermal section every 10 years to cope with the fouling problem. To solve this problem a number of fouling precipitation methods have been proposed and performed. In the present study, the method of organic coating has been done to overcome the problem of fouling on carbon steel substrate ASTM A36 which is often used as pipeline in geothermal company and oil and gas. The sand blasting process has been done before the coating is applied. Binders that use in this study are epoxy as the primary layer and polyurethane as the final layer on the substrate. In the final layer added pigments of zinc flake and graphite, with a ratio of 0; 1: 1; 3: 1; 5: 1. The immersing process is carried out in NaHCO3 / CaCl2 solution at 50ºC to give rise to CaCO3 fouling. Tests conducted for the analysis of this coating material in the form of TGA testing, pull off test, bending test, abrasive testing, potentiostat, XRD, and morphological testing of optical microscopy and SEM / EDX. Addition of zinc: 5: 1 pigment graphite has the best effect in inhibiting the growth of CaCO3 fouling, with a deposited mass of only 0.05 mg and decreasing the crystallization size of 1,619 μm of fouling. Addition of zinc:graphite pigment in coating layer can improve adhesion strength, abrasion resistance, improve corrosion resistance, and improve the thermal properties of the coating layer.
