Abstract

Sorbitol telah banyak digunakan sebagai pengganti gula untuk penderita diabetes, produksi vitamin C, softener dan moisture stabilizer di industri makanan, kosmetik, tekstil, industri kertas, dan juga medis. Proses produksi sorbitol kebanyakan menggunakan hidrogenasi dengan bantuan katalis. Katalis yang sering dipakai adalah katalis berbasis Ni, namun keburukannya adalah mudah leaching dan deaktivasinya cepat. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mempelajari pembuatan katalis Ni/C dengan metode wet impregnation, mengetahui pengaruh % loading Ni pada C terhadap konversi glukosa, dan mengetahui pengaruh temperatur reaksi terhadap yield sorbitol melalui proses hidrogenasi glukosa. Alur dari penelitian ini adalah pembuatan katalis Ni/karbon aktif dimana karbon aktif dibuat sendiri dari bamboo, lalu proses hidrogenasi glukosa. Produk reaksi kemudian dianalisa dengan HPLC. Variabel dalam penelitian ini ada dua yaitu variabel tetap dan berubah. Variabel tetap meliputi % loading Ni, massa katalis (10%) dan jumlah bahan baku (200 mL). Variabel berubah meliputi suhu, dan waktu pengambilan sampel. Ni/Karbon aktif berhasil dibuat dengan luas permukaan 125 m2/g dan loading Ni sebesar 10.03%. Yield sorbitol tertinggi sebesar 3.04% pada 90 ̊C dan tekanan 5 bar. =========================================================================================================
Sorbitol has been used as sugar substitute for diabetics, also for an additive in vitamin C production, softener and moisture stabilizer in food industry, cosmetic, textile, paper industry, and medical purpose. Production process of sorbitol mostly use hydrogenation with aid of catalyst. Ni-based catalyst is widely used because it has high selectivity but the main problem is, Ni leaching and fast catalyst deactivation. The aims of this study are to learn how to manufacture a Ni/activated carbon catalyst by using wet impregnation, studied the coversion of % loading Ni to the total catalyst, and learn the temperature variation in the sorbitol yield by glucose hidrogenation . The steps of this research consist of manufacturing of Ni/activated carbon catalyst and hydrogenation of glucose to sorbitol. The product of hydrogenation were analyzed using HPLC. In this research there are fixed variable and changed variable. Fixed variable consist of % loading of Ni, raw material, type of catalyst, and the catalyst mass. Changed variable consist of temperature and time interval for sampling. Ni/AC had been made with surface area of 125 m2/g and loading metal Ni in AC 10.03%. Highest yield of sorbitol was 3.04%, achieved at temperature 90OC and 5 bar pressure.
