Abstract

membuat pasar bisnis kacamata kayu semakin meningkat. Kacamata kayu
Penulis melakukan eksperimen pola potong kayu, proses
pemotongan kayu, finishing, layering, laser cutting, mix-material, wood bending,

The phenomenon of wooden glasses among young people and the issue
of eco-design has improved wooden glasses market. Wooden glasses are capable to
bring quirky impression and distinguish themselves from the others. Common types
of wood used as wooden glasses materials are teak, sonokeling, or ebony.
Meanwhile, there is a type of wood with abundant availability in East Java that has
potential as wooden glasses material: Robusta coffee (Coffea Canephora) wood,
because it is classified as hardwood type II and has sufficient elasticity. However,
the economic value of this wood is currently low, as it is only used as firewood.
This research aims to optimize the economic value of Robusta coffee wood and its
utilization as glasses. The first step was market analysis. The result of market
analysis was a decision of who was the potential target of user/consumer/buyer. The
next analysis was “persona”. The author analyzed user activity to develop a
“persona” and create artefact analysis. “Persona” method was used to illustrate the
behavior and lifestyle of user, while artefact analysis is to get a picture or the pattern
of fashion-stuffs owned by user. This method resulted in series of design concepts:
“Diver”, “Sherlock”, and “Storyteller”. Furthermore, the authors made a mood
board as media design guide, by collecting images, photos and material containing
related situation, theme or color. Mood board aims to determine the shape of
wooden glasses to meet the design concept. Finally, experiments were conducted
with the exploration of wood materials to get the impression, in accordance with
the design concept, those are: wood cutting processes with many patterns, finishing,
layering, laser cutting, mix-material, wood bending, component mounting support
and the market test. The results of this study indicate that Robusta coffee wood has
potential to be developed into wooden glasses. But the challenge lies in quality
control, considering the difficulties faced in the process of cutting (mostly wood
coffee has a lot of cracks), mixing wood with resin, the requirement to fit into
human head anthropometry, and bending wood. The quality control will guarantee
the precise and consistent quality to ensure the wooden glasses is comfortable to
wear.
