Abstract

Serious environmental concerns regarding the use of fossil-based fuels have raised awareness about the need to find alternative clean and renewable fuels. Biodiesel is considered as a diesel substitute for clean, non-toxic but biodegradabel, produced through transesterification of triglycerides with alcohol in the presence of the right catalyst. But the main detrimental properties of biodiesel - namely water absorption, corrosion and high viscosity - mainly arise due to the effect of the length of the storage period. The changes in physical chatacteristics due to oxidation and the presence of contaminants in biodiesel not only significantly affects engine performance but also complicates handling and storage. Therefore, maintain stability when handling and storage biodiesel is an important step during use. To overcome this problem, several solutions are carried out, among others, by doing Circulating and Filtering Methods. Filtering is done to keep Fuel Cleanliness maintained at the level of 18/16/13, according to ISO 4406 standards. While the Circulating system functions so that the stability of biodiesel stored in the tank for too long can be maintained. This study as an improvement in storage methods to support the operations of PT. Vale Indonesia Tbk. reliable and available, which reaches Physical Availability above 85%.
