Abstract

Pergerakan indie video game development yang semakin diminati para
developer video game, lebih membebaskan kreativitas mereka dalam
mengembangkan video game. Hasilnya, video game karya mereka jadi lebih unik
dan memiliki penggemar tersendiri. Keunikan tersebut, salah satunya, dapat
dilihat pada penggunaan pixel art sebagai gaya visual. Industri video game di
Indonesia sedang mengalami perkembangan. Peluang ini dapat dimanfaatkan
untuk merancang indie video game yang ditujukan untuk konsumen video game
Indonesia dan dapat dinikmati oleh konsumen diseluruh dunia.
Perancangan ini menggunakan metode riset kualitatif dengan teknik
pengumpulan data dengan observasi terhadap video game berjenis Beat 'em Up,
wawancara dan studi pustaka. Metode kualitatif digunakan untuk mengetahui
preferensi jenis video game populer dan konsol yang disukai oleh konsumen video
game Indonesia. Penulis mencari rumusan yang tepat dalam menyisipkan aspek
etnik Indonesia kedalam video game agar dapat diterima dengan baik oleh
konsumen lokal dan internasional. Salah satu caranya adalah penggambaran visual
dengan gaya pixel art yang sedang marak dipakai developer video game.
Hasil konsep perancangan ini adalah indie video game berlatar budaya
Indonesia. Eksekusi perancangan menggunakan ilustrasi pixel art untuk karakter,
antarmuka dan setting dan digital painting untuk menggambarkan opening video
game Barasamaya. Hasil akhir desain akan menjadi langkah pertama penulis
untuk mengenalkan budaya Indonesia ke dunia serta menciptakan video game
sesuai dengan minat dan kemampuan penulis.

The movement of indie video game development is now considered having
more potential to the video game developer, which means more rooms to expand
their creativities resulting in more unique video games which atrracted particular
fans or niche market. The uniqueness, for example, can be seen from the use of
pixel art as its visual style. The video game industry in Indonesia is experiencing
rapid growth, both in developers and customers area, making Indonesia a
potential market for the video game industry. This is an opportunity to make an
indie video game aimed at local consumers which also can be enjoyed by
consumers throughout the world.
This design process use qualitative research methods such as observation of
some beat'em up-type video games, depth interviews and literature studies. The
quantitave research methods to get informations about local consumer's video
games' types and consoles preferences. Writers find the right methods in applying
Indonesian ethnical aspects into video games in order to be well received by
consumers: using pixel art as visual style, which is popular among developers
recently.
The result of this design concept is an independent video game with Indonesian
traditional culture settings. The design excecution uses pixel art for characters,
settings and interface, and digital painting technique for opening scene and
cutscenes. This video game will be the steppingstone for the author to introduce
Indonesian culture to the world and to create a video game in accordance with
author's interest and skill.
