Abstract

An unavoidable phenomenon of the use of steel in offshore buildings and floating vessels is corrosion. One method of preventing corrosion is by coating. Currently the type of coating that has been developed in the maritime industry is polyurethane. The success of the coating process is very dependent on the surface preparation process. The usual method used is blasting using abrasive material. The purpose of this research was to analyze the effect of variations in abrasive material and thickness of polyurethane coating on ASTM A36 steel towards the strength of paint adhesion and corrosion rate in the sea water environment. The steel material will be blasted with silica sand and steel grit, then the material will be coated with polyurethane with a thickness of 60 μm, 80 μm, and 100 μm then the adhesion strength and corrosion rate will be tested. The results of this study indicate that the greatest value of adhesion strength is shown in material blasting using steel grit with a coating thickness of 60 μm that is equal to 20,6 MPa. while the smallest corrosion rate values obtained by material blasting with steel grit abrasive material with a thickness of 100 μm that is equal to 0,00008 mm/a. From these results the abrasive steel grit material and a thickness of 100 μm are recommended for the use of polyurethane coatings in oil and gas industry.
