Abstract

The phenomenon of COVID-19 pandemic requires transmission prevention such as social distancing and physical distancing that must be implemented. In the education sector, there is no other choice but to switch to online learning or e-learning from conventional face-to-face learning. Online learning is categorized into 2 methods, which are synchronous and asynchronous learning. Each of the synchronous and asynchronous learning implementation has its own advantages and disadvantages that can affect the efficiency and effectiveness of online learning felt by students. Therefore, this study aims to analyze students' perceptions of synchronous and asynchronous online learning acceptance by comparing the results of the two which are expected to be a reference for institutional management. The data obtained from 165 respondents in the synchronous online learning survey and 150 in the asynchronous online learning survey obtained through outspreading online questionnaires using Google Forms. This study uses a quantitative approach and uses Partial Least Square-Structure Equation Modeling (PLS-SEM) to analyze the data and obtain the results that student acceptance of online learning is determined by the instructor characteristics, technological innovation and the quality of the learning system. While in online asynchronous learning, it has found that instructor characteristics, organizational and technical support, technological innovation, and trust influence the acceptance by learners. Managerial implications that can be implemented are also listed to assist institutions in increasing acceptance of online learning both synchronously and asynchronously.
