Abstract

Citizens of Dayeuhkolot, Bandung, has already accustomed to floods. The reason of the floods is the overflowing of Citarum river water flow, which is not only caused by high rainfall but also from the shipping water from other places during the rainy season. The location of the village near the river exacerbates the height of the water that inundates when floods occur. Water can overflow up to two meters above the ground and obstructed many activities of the communities. The houses of the people there are intentionally built two levels or even more to adapting to the floods. So that when the water starts to sink the first floor, they will move their activities to the upper floor. They also have canoes as a transportation when the floods hit. This is one of the ways they adapt to the floods. But if the water does not recede for a long time, they will eventually evacuate to the place provided by the local government. Actually, the local government has called on people to move to better locations but most of them are reluctant to do so. Th reason is because they have been living in the area for some generations and their work’s location is close to their house. The development of sustainable flats is an alternative solution to the problem of settlement needs that can facilitate the occupants, in this case is the residents of Desa Dayeuhkolot, especially also maintaining the atmosphere of the village environment that is closely related to them.
