Abstract

Indonesia's nuclear power plant (PLTN) is targeted to start operating in 2027. Indonesia contains 130,974 tons of thorium. Even thorium has better properties than uranium. One of the minerals containing thorium and located in Indonesia is monazite sand in Bangka Belitung. The purpose of this study was to analyze the effect of variations in Electric Arc Furnace (EAF) electric current on the monazite sand smelting process on the compounds formed, the composition of the main compounds and their recovery, and the grade of ThO2. Smelting was carried out at a temperature of 1850oC for 287 seconds and a voltage of 40 V. The variations of the electric current used were 50 A, 60 A, 70 A, 80 A, and 90 A. The materials used consisted of monazite sand as feed material, CaCO3 as additive material. additive, carbon powder as reducing agent, SiO2 as flux. After smelting, characterization was carried out through X-Ray Diffraction (XRD) testing to determine the compounds contained and X-Ray Fluorosence (XRF) to determine the composition of the compounds contained. Through the analysis of the XRD test results there were new compounds, namely calcium titanium oxide (CaTiO3) in all variations, hatrurite (Ca3SiO5) only at 50 A and 60 A, and fayalite (Fe2SiO4) in all variations, except at 50 A. Then, through analysis XRF test results obtained Fe2O3 with the lowest grade (10.95%) at 70 A and the lowest recovery (10.54%) at 50 A, and TiO2 with the lowest grade (22.95%) and the lowest recovery (6.47%). at 50 A. Meanwhile, ThO2 with the highest grade (0.45%) and the highest recovery (38.29%) was found at 80 A. Through the calculation of separation efficiency (S.E.) the most efficient electric current was found to be 80 A, where S.E. Fe2O3, TiO2, and ThO2 were 11.62%, 4.02%, and 38.19%, respectively. Even so, the smelted monazite sand still contains a lot of impurities. Therefore, further ThO2 extraction methods are needed to be more optimal, for example using the hydrometallurgical method.
