Abstract

Over the past five years, the Board Game industry in Indonesia has demonstrated significant potential in the creative industry sector. The Ministry of Tourism and Creative Economy (Kemenparekraf) has supported this growth through various local events and competitions, resulting in Board Games with strategic themes and local cultural content. This trend presents opportunities to highlight historical stories and popular folklore, such as the legend of Roro Jonggrang associated with Prambanan Temple. Prambanan Temple, as one of Indonesia's cultural icons, carries a fascinating folktale, namely the story of Roro Jonggrang and Bandung Bondowoso. This tale narrates the effort to construct a thousand temples in one night as a condition for marriage. The mythological and historical elements embedded in the story provide a unique appeal for adaptation into a Board Game theme. Therefore, this research explores the theme of the Roro Jonggrang legend at Prambanan Temple, set in the classical Javanese era. The design process began with data collection through literature studies on game mechanics, visual design techniques, and content related to the Roro Jonggrang legend and Prambanan Temple. The collected data was then utilized in experimental studies to design the mechanics and visuals of the Board Game. Subsequently, observations were conducted through test play sessions with respondents to evaluate the game's playability, followed by in-depth interviews with Board Game experts. Feedback from these processes was used to refine the prototype. The final prototype was tested with the target audience using post-test methods to gather responses to the design. The research resulted in a Board Game set featuring negotiation and construction mechanics, themed around the Roro Jonggrang legend at Prambanan Temple, set in the classical Javanese era. The Board Game components include a game board as the playing area, character cards (Roro Jonggrang, Bandung Bondowoso, temple-building spirits), mission cards, equipment cards, challenge cards, and 3D temple stone tokens representing the construction of the thousand temples. This Board Game is expected to serve as an entertaining and educational medium while also possessing commercial value.
