Abstract
The Robotic Mobile Fulfillment System (RMFS) is an innovative warehouse automation solution designed to improve efficiency, particularly in e-commerce environments where rapid order fulfillment is critical. RMFS operates by having robots transport movable storage units, called pods, directly to workstations. At these stations, employees either pick items from the pods to fulfill customer orders or restock them with new inventory. This “parts-to-picker” method significantly reduces the time workers spend moving around the warehouse, leading to faster order processing and increased operational efficiency. Major companies, such as Amazon, have implemented RMFS on a large scale following Amazon’s acquisition of Kiva Systems, the technology’s original developer. The RMFS model, by reducing travel time and increasing throughput, has also been adopted by companies like Swisslog, Interlink, and GreyOrange. This internship project at the Center for Internet of Things (CITI) focuses on analyzing and documenting 19 RMFS models aimed at optimizing various system elements, as outlined in the research by Merschformann et al. in Decision Rules for Robotic Mobile Fulfillment Systems. The study is organized into five key areas: (1) Generators, which manage order and inventory flow; (2) Layout, focusing on efficient warehouse design for robot movement; (3) Traffic, addressing robot movement and collision prevention; (4) Order Picking and Replenishment, coordinating item picking and restocking processes; and (5) Order Processing, covering the workflow from order placement to shipment. User Manual, Detailed use case and sequence diagrams are created for each area, providing a comprehensive operational view of the RMFS and its subsystems. This documentation offers practical insights for improving RMFS 6 efficiency in e-commerce warehouses, enabling better handling of high-demand, small-batch orders.
