Abstract

Infrastructure development at Institut Teknologi Sepuluh Nopember (ITS) must consider the presence of vital facilities, particularly underground power cables that supply electricity to utilities and buildings across the ITS campus. According to the ITS Bureau of Facilities and Infrastructure, there is currently no existing map of underground power cable distribution, with their presence only marked by surface-level stakes. This study aims to map the location of 20 kVA underground power cables within the Faculty of Civil, Planning, and Geo Engineering (FT-SPK) area of ITS. The geophysical method employed is Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) with a frequency of 670 MHz, processed through steps including Static Correction, Gain, Bandpass Filtering, Background Removal, and Time-Depth Conversion. Additionally, the RD8200 pipe locator was used to trace the direction of power cables, validated by soil excavation. GPS geodetic measurements were also used to obtain accurate coordinates. The results of this research include a map showing the continuity of 20 kVA underground power cables extending from the southeast to the west at depths ranging from 0.50 m to 1.30 m, with an estimated cable diameter of 0.08 m. The RMSE value of the pipe locator compared to excavation results is 1.9%. This study demonstrates that the use of GPR and a pipe locator is effective for detecting underground power cable continuity and is beneficial for utility mapping within the ITS campus.
