Abstract

According to data from BSSN (Indonesia’s National Cyber and Crypto Agency), the most common type of cyber incident is data breaches. This indicates a lack of public understanding of fundamental information security concepts, including cryptography. To address this challenge, a web-based application called Cryptical: Layer of Protection was developed, an educational game centered on cryptography using an escape room approach. Players are challenged to solve puzzles using basic cryptographic algorithms such as hashing and digital signatures, as well as to understand the differences between symmetric and asymmetric encryption. The game is designed for general audiences, with simplified cryptographic concepts to make them easier to grasp. The development process followed the Game Development Life Cycle (GDLC) methodology and utilized the Next.js framework. To evaluate its effectiveness as a learning tool, an experiment was conducted with two groups: one using traditional learning methods (reading a module), and the other using the developed game. The results showed that the game-based group experienced a 23% increase in understanding, compared to just 4.57% in the traditional group. The overall impact score reached 93.6%, and the usability evaluation yielded a System Usability Scale (SUS) score of 69.53%, which is above the average benchmark. These findings suggest that the gamified approach used in Cryptical: Layer of Protection is more effective in improving users’ understanding and interest in cryptography, although individual effectiveness may still vary.
