Abstract

The utilization of geothermal energy represents one of the strategic pillars in Indonesia’s transition toward a sustainable energy system. Indonesia possesses vast potential for clean energy, however geothermal development projects continue to face complex social challenges, particularly related to community acceptance in
areas surrounding exploration sites. This study aims to analyze the factors influencing social acceptance of geothermal energy by integrating the Comprehensive Technology Acceptance Framework (CTAF) within a sustainability management perspective. This research adopts a quantitative approach using a survey method, in which data were collected from Indonesian communities and analyzed using Partial Least Squares Structural Equation Modeling (PLS-SEM) with SmartPLS 4.0 software. The results indicate that public trust, production perception, and safety perception have a significant effect on positive emotions. In addition, public trust and safety perception also positively influence negative emotions. Energy awareness and perceived socio-economic costs do not have a significant effect on either positive or negative emotions. Both
positive and negative emotions significantly shape social acceptance, where optimism, comfort, and low levels of anxiety enhance acceptance attitudes toward geothermal energy. Emotions act as partial mediators between perceptions and social acceptance only along significant pathways, indicating that affective mechanisms explain only part of the relationship between perceptions and social
acceptance. These findings are expected to serve as a foundation for formulating communication strategies, policies, and geothermal project management practices
that are more inclusive, participatory, and oriented toward the socio-emotional experiences of local communities.
