Abstract

Seagrass ecosystems are coastal habitats that play an important ecological role; however, they continue to experience pressure from human activities, resulting in a global decline in their coverage and ecological quality. Seagrasses are highly responsive to environmental changes through structural, physiological, and biochemical parameters. Furthermore, their ability to accumulate heavy metals makes them highly suitable as bioindicators as well as agents for phytoremediation. This study aims to assess the status of seagrass meadows using the *Seagrass Ecological Quality Index* (SEQI) and to examine its relationship with the dynamics of seawater quality in the coastal area of Sepulu District, Bangkalan Regency. The status of the seagrass meadows (SEQI) was determined through field surveys using the line transect and quadrat methods. The main parameters included seagrass species diversity, percentage cover, canopy height, and epiphyte abundance. Water quality testing was conducted during both high and low tide conditions, including measurements of Total Suspended Solids (TSS), temperature, pH, salinity, Dissolved Oxygen (DO), BOD₅, and nitrate. Furthermore, a comparative analysis was performed to examine the relationship between the seagrass meadow status index and water quality parameters. The results indicated variations in the ecological quality of seagrass meadows along the coast of Sepulu District. Based on the SEQI values, Maneron Village (0.33) and Labuhan Village (0.36) both exhibited ecological conditions classified as very poor. The seagrass meadow status (SEQI) was found to be directly proportional to coastal water quality. This study concludes that seagrass meadows have moderate potential as bioindicators of coastal waters and are recommended for long-term environmental monitoring programs.
