Abstract

The phenomenon of taboos in Chinese culture is still widely believed by society, particularly among Generation Z, without sufficient understanding of their historical background or underlying rationality. This reflects a tendency toward mystical logic, a way of thinking that associates events with irrational causes without clear cause-and-effect relationships. This concept aligns with the principles of Materialism, Dialectics, and Logic (MADILOG) introduced by Tan Malaka, which emphasize rational, critical, and empirical thinking. On the other hand, Generation Z as digital natives tends to consume fast-paced, visual, and entertainment-based content, creating the need for educational media that is adaptive to these consumption patterns. This project aims to develop literacy videos based on visual storytelling that discuss Chinese cultural taboos through a cause-and-effect approach. TikTok is used as the primary distribution platform due to its relevance to Generation Z’s media consumption habits. The content is designed with concise narratives, cinematic visuals, and a firm yet informative communication style to enhance audience engagement. The design method includes data collection through literature studies, questionnaires, and in-depth interviews, followed by observation, concept development, content production, user testing, and evaluation. The results of the user testing using a paired sample t-test show that the t-value (7.223) is greater than the t-table value (2.000) at a significance level of α = 0.05, indicating a significant difference between audience understanding before (pre-test) and after (post-test) watching the videos. In terms of media performance, the content achieved an average of 1,083 views per video with a total of 13,000 views, with the majority of traffic coming from the For You Page and search features, indicating strong content relevance to audience needs. These findings demonstrate that the integration of logic-based storytelling, strong visual elements, and platform algorithm utilization can effectively enhance message delivery and encourage a shift in audience mindset from mystical logic toward more rational thinking in line with MADILOG principles.
