Abstract

The integration of UAVs into modern communication networks demands high reliability, yet FSO links are vulnerable to weather while RF links are limited in capacity. This final project evaluates a hybrid FSO/RF switching system for multi-hop UAV networks that operates based on channel conditions: a hard-switching mechanism selects the FSO or RF link at each hop according to the instantaneous FSO SNR relative to a given threshold. The FSO channel is modeled with the Gamma-Gamma distribution and the RF channel with Nakagami-m fading over four hops spanning 0.5 km, evaluated semi-analytically in MATLAB and validated through Monte Carlo simulation. The hybrid scheme consistently outperforms both FSO-only.
and RF-only links, achieving a BER of 10⁻⁶ at -15.7 dBm (clear air) with an optimal threshold
of 10-14 dB, and trailing the ideal selection combining (SC) bound by only 1-2 dB. Its main
contribution is demonstrating that per-hop SNR-threshold switching delivers reliability close to
the ideal combining scheme at substantially lower hardware complexity, making it suitable for
power-constrained UAV platforms.
