Abstract

Motor development in elementary school-aged children requires stimulation through activities that involve body movement, coordination, and balance. However, the increasing use of digital devices and passive screen-based activities may reduce children’s opportunities to engage in physical movement. Based on this issue, this design project aims to develop an interactive casual game using camera-based motion tracking as a medium to stimulate the motor abilities of children aged 7–13 years. The design process applies a Design-Based Research (DBR) approach combined with Research and Development (R&D). The process begins with a literature review, target audience study, questionnaire distribution, existing game analysis, and in-depth interviews. The collected data are then developed during the pre-production stage through the creation of a Game Design Document, gameplay design, motion mechanics, character design, UI/UX design, visual concept development, and feedback system planning. The design outcome is a prototype game titled Flap & Fiasco, developed using Unity Engine and MediaPipe to detect player movements in real time, integrating simple motion mechanics such as jumping to the right and left, moving the hips rhythmically, and waving the hands according to the game instructions, supported by child-friendly 2D flat visuals and responsive visual and audio feedback, while the user testing results involving 15 respondents showed a System Usability Scale (SUS) score of 63 with a C- category, indicating that although the game still requires further development, it has demonstrated potential as an interactive medium that encourages children to move actively through an enjoyable, easy-to-understand play experience that aligns with the developmental characteristics of elementary school-aged children.
