Abstract

The heavy equipment industry plays an important role in supporting the construction and mining sectors; however, manufacturing and component recovery activities continue to generate potential environmental impacts. Remanufacturing can extend component service life while reducing the need for new materials. This study aims to analyze the potential environmental impacts of heavy equipment engine remanufacturing subprocesses at PT Komatsu Remanufacturing Asia using a process-based Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) approach. The study applies a gate-to-gate system boundary covering pre-washing, disassembly, machining, and engine washing. The analyzed objects consist of the SAA12V140E-3, SAA6D170E-5, and SAA6D140E-5 engines. Environmental impact assessment was conducted using SimaPro with the ReCiPe 2016 Midpoint Hierarchist method across 18 impact categories. Variations in core condition were evaluated through scenario analysis, while sensitivity analysis was performed for electricity sources and chemical consumption. The economic implications were estimated by converting Global Warming Potential (GWP) results into carbon tax values. The results show that machining is the main environmental hotspot due to its high electricity consumption, while engine washing is the next largest contributor because of its energy and chemical use. The normalization results indicate that human carcinogenic toxicity is the most prominent impact category. Scenarios with higher replacement rates produce lower gate-to-gate impacts because machining and engine washing requirements are reduced; however, the impacts of new part production and transportation are not included. Changes in electricity sources have a substantial influence on the LCIA results, whereas a ±20% change in chemical consumption has a relatively limited effect. The findings can support the prioritization of environmental impact reduction measures in heavy equipment engine remanufacturing subprocesses.
