Abstract

Palm Oil Mills (POMs) in Indonesia generally store Crude Palm Oil (CPO) in storage tanks, where the temperature must be maintained within the range of 40–60°C to preserve oil quality and prevent an increase in Free Fatty Acid (FFA) content. Currently, tank condition monitoring is still widely performed manually using the manual sounding method, which requires approximately 30–45 minutes per tank at a height of 10–15 meters, making the process inefficient and posing safety risks to operators. This study aims to design and develop a prototype of an Internet of Things (IoT)-based system for monitoring temperature, liquid level, and CPO transfer between two tanks (Tank A as the sending tank and Tank B as the receiving tank). The system employs load cells integrated with an HX711 module to estimate mass and volume, a K-type thermocouple with a MAX6675 module for temperature measurement, and an HC-SR04 ultrasonic sensor for liquid level detection. The heater, pump, and valve are controlled using a rule-based control approach based on if–else logic implemented on an ESP32 microcontroller, while real-time monitoring data are displayed through the ThingSpeak platform. The entire system development process, including design, implementation, verification, and validation, was carried out using the V-Model methodology. The experimental results show that the load cell achieved an average accuracy of 98.92% (1.08% error), the thermocouple exhibited an error ranging from 0.07% to 0.50%, and the ultrasonic sensor achieved an average accuracy of 97.25%. In the overall system evaluation conducted over 50 test trials, all monitoring and CPO transfer operations were successfully completed, with successful real-time data transmission to the IoT platform. These results demonstrate that the proposed V-Model-based system can serve as an effective alternative to the conventional manual sounding method, improving monitoring efficiency while supporting automatic overfill prevention during the CPO transfer process.
