Abstract

In the medical application, Stainless Steel 316L has been known as medical equipment and bone implants due to its good corrosion resistance, however
this material does not have antimicrobial properties so that bacteria can still grow on the
surface. The antimicrobial property is the ability to inhibit the growth of bacteria such as those possessed by some metals such as silver (Ag), copper (Cu) and gold (Au). But there is also a compound which is titanium alloy that is titanium dioxide (TiO2) which also has antimicrobial property. Therefore, Ag and TiO2
material are used as the target material in the formation process of thin film using Physical Vapor Deposition RF Sputtering method on SS 316L. The mozaic method is
applied to deposit on the SS316L substrate. Deposition time variation was also applied in this study, which were 30, 40, 50 and 60 minutes to analyze the
effect on the morphological, mechanical and antimicrobial of the thin layer formed. SEM-EDX, XRD, AFM, adhesion strength, and in vitro antimicrobial capability are performed for thin layer characterization. The time difference of the deposition causes the different
thickness of Ag-TiO2 thin layer deposited onto the surface
of the substrate. The thickest thin layer is in the sample with a 60-minutes deposition time which has the highest
Ag-TiO2 particles on it. The more content of the deposited Ag causes the surface of the sample rougher due to agglomeration of Ag on the surface of the sample. Moreover, as more TiO2 is deposited onto the surface of the sample, the rise in mechanical properties of the thin film. In
addition, the antimicrobial ability of the thin film also increases with the addition of the Ag and TiO2 particles. Thus, the best antimicrobial ability is with 60 minutes deposition time.
