Abstract

Arc flash release energy can damage equipment and dangerous for the workers who working in the area, because it can contain energy with heat radiation reaching of 〖35.000〗^0F. Because of the impact that might occur, a flash protection boundary is needed for the workers based on the energy that occurs, arc flash analysis can use IEEE 1584-2002 or by modification methods. The IEEE 1584-2002 standard calculates energy incidents using the largest bolted three-phase fault and fault clearing time to secure the occurrence of fault currents, while the modification method calculates based on the contribution of short-circuit currents to fault clearing time. From the results of calculations for arc flash analysis on a 6 kV electrical system, the value of incident arc flash energy using the modified method has a lower value than the IEEE 1584-2002 standard. Using the IEEE 1584-2002 standard on bus 10BBA01, 10BBB01, 10BCA01, and 10BCB01 produce energy incidents in a sequence of 46,29 cal/〖cm〗^2, 43,65 cal/〖cm〗^2, 24,10 cal/〖cm〗^2 dan 22,88 cal/〖cm〗^2, while the modification method produced an energy incident of 38,73 cal/〖cm〗^2, 36,32 cal/〖cm〗^2, 20,54 cal/〖cm〗^2, 19,23 cal/〖cm〗^2. Furthermore, at 87 GTU differential relay, the pick-up is error that will cause relay to work when there is an external 2 phase short circuit on the 10BAA or PLN 500 kV bus. Based on the results of the analysis it is recommended that the differential relay setting would be I_set=1,4 Ie, I_(instan )=5,28Ie, and slope= 0,75.
