Abstract
Pabrik Gula Gending merupakan salah satu pabrik yang menggunakan mesin uap dalam proses produksinya. Mesin uap tersebut bekerja selama 24 jam pada musim giling selama 4 sampai 6 bulan. Dalam proses penggunaan mesin uap, poros atau shaft pada mesin uap tersebut mengalami kegagalan yang diakibatkan beban berulang. Setelah di teliti ternyata material komponen shaft ini tidak sesuai dengan standar yang ditetapkan yaitu ASSAB 705. Material ini tergolong baja karbon medium dimana nilai kekerasannya dan sifat mekanik yang dibutuhkan tidak sesuai standar dari aplikasi shaft. Dari permasalahan tersebut perlu dilakukan optimalisasi sifat mekanik material dimana pada penelitian ini menggunakan perlakuan panas pack carburizing. Metode yang dilakukan pada penelitian ini adalah pack carburizing dengan variasi perbandingan masa karbon dan energizer CaCO3 (100%C, 90%C:10%, 80%C:20%, dan 70%C:10%) yang dipanaskan pada temperatur 930oC dengan variasi waktu tahan 1 jam dan 3 jam. Kemudian dilakukan pengujian kekerasan permukaan, depth of hardness, dan metalografi. Berdasarkan pengujian tersebut, didapatkan hasil, bahwa dengan adanya penambahan energizer yang cukup pada proses carburizing menyebabkan difusi karbon bertambah cepat sehingga kekerasan yang didapatkan lebih besar pula. Kekerasan permukaan yang didapatkan pada spesimen En0/ht1, En10/ht1, En20/ht1, dan En30/ht1 berturut-turut adalah 781.4 HV, 763 HV, 809 HV, dan 766 HV. Sementara kekerasan permukaan yang didapatkan pada spesimen En0/ht3, En10/ht3, En20/ht3, dan En30/ht3 berturut-turut adalah, 808.4 HV, 845 HV, 779 HV, 646 HV. Kekerasan permukaan meningkat karena ditemukan struktur plate martensit pada permukaan baja hasil carburizing.

Gula Gending Factory is one of the factories that use steam engine in their production process. The steam engine was working for 24 hours on the milling season for 4 to 6 months. In the process of using steam engine, the shaft on the steam engine is get a failure due to repeated loads. After being inspected, it turns out that the shaft component material is not accordance with the standard set, ASSAB 705. The material is classified as medium carbon steel where the hardness value and required mechanical properties are not in accordance with the standard of the shaft application. From these problems is necessary to optimize the mechanical properties of the material, in this experiment using carburizing heat treatment. The method that use in this experiment is pack carburizing with the mass ratio of carbon and energizer CaCO3 as a variation and heated in 930oC with holding time 1 and 3 hours. Testing methods that is used on this speciment are hardness testing, depth of hardness, and metallography. Based on experiment, the results obtained, that the addition of sufficient CaCO3 energizer in the carburizing process causes the diffusion of carbon increase, so that the hardness of the material also greater than before. The hardness obtained in specimens En0/ht1, En10/ht1, En20/ht1, dan En30/ht1 is 781.4 HV, 763 HV, 809 HV, and 766 HV. While the hardness obtained in the ratio of En0/ht3, En10/ht3, En20/ht3, and En30/ht3is 808.4 HV, 845 HV, 779 HV, 646 HV. The hardness increases because of the plate martensite is found in the microstructure of the carburized steel.
