Abstract
Rumah Susun Sombo adalah salah satu rumah susun tertua di Kota Surabaya. Didirikan pada tahun 1989 dan selesai didirikan pada tahun selanjutnya. Hingga saat ini, Rumah Susun Sombo masih menjadi percontohan bagi rumah susun lainnya di Kota Surabaya dalam aspek struktur bangunan dan tata letak ruangan. Namun pembangunan Rumah Susun Sombo bukan tanpa cela. Terdapat beberapa kekurangan didalam unit rumah susun tersebut, terutama adalah terbatasnya ukuran ruangan. Akibatnya keluarga yang menghuni ruangan sebesar 6 x 3 x 3 meter itu memiliki privasi yang terbatas, baik bagi orangtua maupun anak. Karena itulah seringkali orangtua harus membagi ruang di tempat tidur dengan anak mereka, bahkan hingga di usia yang layak untuk dipisah tempat tidurnya. Di sisi lain menyediakan ruang untuk anak tidak memungkinkan karena ukuran ruangan yang terbatas serta ruangan yang tersisa untuk dimanfaatkan telah diisi oleh perabot lainnya seperti wardrobe, storage, dan lainnya.
Dari berbagai poin permasalahan tersebut menghasilkan berbagai pertimbangan yang berujung pada penentuan konsep multifungsi. Konsep multifungsi memungkinkan orangtua pada unit rumah susun untuk memiliki tempat tidur bagi anak mereka tanpa kehilangan fungsi dari perabot-perabot lainnya, sehingga berbagai kebutuhan penghuni unit rumah susun dapat terpenuhi.

Sombo Flats is one of the oldest flats in the city of Surabaya. Founded in 1989 and completed in the following year. Until now, Sombo Flats is still a model for other flats in the city of Surabaya in terms of a building structure and room layout. But the construction of Sombo Flats is not flawless. There are several drawbacks to the apartment unit, especially the limited size of the room. As a result, the family that inhabits a room of 6 x 3 x 3 meters has limited privacy, both for parents and children. Because of that, often parents have to divide the space in bed with their children, even at the appropriate age to separate their beds. On the other hand, providing space for children is not possible because the size of the room is limited and the remaining space to be used has been filled by other furniture such as wardrobe, storage, and others.
From various points of the problem resulted in various considerations which led to the determination of the multifunctional concept. The multifunctional concept allows parents in apartment units to have beds for their children without losing the function of other furniture so that the various needs of residents of apartment units can be fulfilled.
