Abstract
PT.

PT. Pupuk Kaltim is the largest urea fertilizer producer in Indonesia, in addition to ammonia and NPK fertilizer producers. Pupuk Kaltim runs its business operations with the aim of meeting domestic fertilizer needs, both for the food crops sector through the distribution of subsidized fertilizers with marketing areas covering the entire eastern region of Indonesia, as well as for the plantation and industrial sectors for non-subsidized products. Companies are required to be able to deliver fertilizers effectively and efficiently with the diverse geographical conditions of Indonesia as well as various modes of transportation in the distribution of these fertilizers. This study aims to compare the efficiency of the selection of fertilizer distribution modes from 3 (three) alternative ways of sending fertilizer using bulk carrier ships, general cargo ships, and container ships to Eastern Indonesia. By using the linear programming optimization method, the result is that the cost of shipping fertilizer using General Cargo when carrying a large quantity (>1.000 ton) of fertilizer will reduce the cost per ton spent. Meanwhile, when there are few options (<1.000 ton) for loading a container ship, it is cheaper than other options. While the bulk carrier option is not relevant to be used in small scale shipments. In the distribution of fertilizer by PT Pupuk Kaltim the optimal sea transportation mode is 52.94 percent using container ships and 47.05 percent using General Cargo.
