Abstract

Bentonite activation in a simple, economical, environmentally friendly and quickly studied to produce good quality acid activated bentonite and it is successfully made with bentonite as raw material derived from Pacitan. XRF analysis shows that there is a decrease in cations Fe3+, Ca2+, Mn2+, Cu2+, dan Zn2+ in the interlayer due to treatment with HCl, so the percentage of Si4+, Al3+, Ti4+ and K+ has increased. XRD analysis shows that the two raw materials of bentonite have a major component in the form of montmorillonite. Specific surface area has increased, before and after activation. For samples with bentonite through by separation process, the increase in surface area is 89,003 m2/g and 441,946 m2/g, respectively. Material before treatment with acid is more solid than material after treatment with acid was observed using SEM. The best bleaching performance was achieved in activated bentonite samples which had been separated by a mass ratio and acid volume of 10:30 compared to commercial material.
