Abstract

Horticultural products, such as fruits and vegetables, are perishable products so that storage with regard to the optimal temperature of the product is needed, especially in the distribution process. This is done so that product quality is maintained until it reaches consumers. A model called refrigerated-container loading problem is developed to answer this challenge. This model is about how to load cargo of fruit and vegetable products in refrigerated containers in a multi-drop case so that the total cost, consisting of penalty costs, quality loss costs, refrigeration costs, shipping costs, unnecessary moving costs and vehicle costs, can be minimized. The model uses a heuristic approach with a wall-building by considering several constraints, i.e. weight limit, stacking, multi-drop, internal temperature distribution and stability. Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) is used to visualize the temperature distribution inside refrigerated containers. Model validity is examined by comparing results in Microsoft Excel VBA with manual calculations and model’s logic. The numerical experiments result of this research show that the minimum total cost will be achieved if the cargo loading plan uses low storage temperatures with high air velocity, uses a homogeneous cargo type, and the total delivery time is less than 10.84 hours. The experimental result also shows that the number of delivery locations and the number of fruit types are the basis for determining a strategy between specific reefer loading or multi reefer loading.
