Abstract

Reinforced beams are structural elements that are susceptible to corrosion when exposed to the marine environment. The overall repair method is considered too expensive to be applicated unless repairing only conducted in a sensitive area reduced due to corrosion. Engineered Cementitious Composite (ECC) is an alternative material that implies a high tensile strength with a strain reach up to 5.1%, which is achieved by forming a large and tight micro cracking. These cracks can constrain the widening of the crack, as a result, to significantly minimize the process of corrosion. These research aims are to obtain the durability of the implementation of ECC material within the Supplementary Concrete (SC) and the Normal Concrete (NC) as designated parameter. A series reinforced concrete beams with three designated parameters are presented. The beams comprised of similar reinforcement where the ratio of compression, tension, and transverse bars were 1.0%, 1.5%, and 1.0% respectively, were given accelerated corrosion. To this end, the beams were tested under four-point bending and they were intended to fail in flexure mode. It is found that ECC beams showing largest ductility compared to other two with no spalling indication. The steel mass loss of transversal and longitudinal are 3.83% and 1.63% respectively. NC and SC beams demonstrate a discernible ductile plateau with the severe damage with spalling after occurring horizontal cracks parallel to the longitudinal reinforcement. The steel mass loss for NC and SC of transversal and longitudinal reinforcement in order are 7.50%, 6.12% and 3.28%, 2.88%. The test also aims to provide improvement in the strengthening of the corroded beam by using ECC. All corroded beams are repaired within ECC patch and loaded under the same scheme to evaluate their performance. These results indicate the adhesion between the ECC layer with the old NC and SC concrete can meet in a good agreement. It is also found that the flexural cracks manifested in each beam after strengthening by ECC are less critical under a damage tolerance of composite.

Key Words: Engineered cementitious composite, corrosion, repairing, flexure behavior.
