Abstract

Banjarmasin city has the character of settlements along the river that reflects the concept of the authentic Banjar settlements on river banks as a product of Nusantara architecture’s. However, the existence of these settlements began to lose their existence due to changes in life orientation from river culture to landed culture. To restore the existence of these settlements, the government of Banjarmasin city plans to develop these settlements into tourist villages with Banjar culture. The strategy applied to this design is through an extending tradition which is based on the dynamic conditions of the Banjar people towards the times and technology but still wants to feel the conditions of the past.
To describe these various things related to the cultural context of living, the needs of the community, and their environment, it is explored through the Force-based Framework. This method is used to optimize the existing potential to improve the quality of settlements by paying attention to various aspects in the context of the location being developed, such as environmental damage, water quality and applicable regulations to be developed into a tourism village. Although there are many prototypes of building designs related to riverbank settlements in Banjarmasin, there are some aspects that have been neglected such as the cultural aspects of urang Banjar which are related to the river and Islam. This has an impact on the quality of settlements that reduce the level of kinship in the Banjar community.
Finally, the design of leading tourism village resulted in several building prototypes with the cultural identity of the Banjar livinghood on the riverbank to accommodate tourism activities, to developed through the extending tradition strategy on several building elements with renewable materials through transformation the space, form, and order. It is hoped that the building prototype can become a reference for the development of buildings on the riverbank in Banjarmasin, to improve environmental quality. Besides, this area is expected to develop into an independent area of food and energy sources by improving regional infrastructures such as the availability of clean water, electricity, and sanitation.
