Abstract

PISA, an international student assesment research, placed Indonesia literacy skills as the second worst from total 65 countries on 2012. This fact shows Indonesia’s low literacy rate, which is in line with the results of Indonesian Language course in National Exam for the recent years. The low and static results indicates how difficult young generation to understand the concept of reading comprehension and writing, when in fact, those substances of literacy study have been accommodated by the course’s basic curriculum. In order to develop literacy skill since early stage, the government and local communities are consistently providing facility access. However, facility provision will not work unless accompanied by a supporting media.
Books could be a potential medium to educate new knowledge and stimulate students’ creativity at the same time. Combined with interesting themes and concepts, students could develop their reading comprehension and reasoning skill by doing practical training in a form of activity book. The processes will lead students to find interesting ideas and gain productive competency of literacy, which is creative writing.
To create a well-designed book and suitable for the target user, a combination of qualitative and quantitative researches are needed. The contents are compiled from literacy study and content analysis of existing media. Meanwhile, the concept, theme, and visual elements will be processed after completing in-depth interviews, questionnaire of user preferences and experimental researches with experts in children’s literacy field.
