Abstract

Inrush current is the current that appears when the power transformer is first energized and has a very high value. In a long time and high frequency, a transformer can shorten its life because the inrush current causes high mechanical and electrical temperatures to the transformer. For this reason, proper design is needed so that the inrush current is not too high. This study will analyze any parameters in the transformer that result in high inrush current values. The analysis begins with transformer modeling on ATP Draw software and continues with wavelet transformation analysis on MATLAB software. After being simulated and analyzed by wavelet transformation, it is found that the parameters that affect the value of the inrush current are the line impedance and the starting angle of the signal when energized. When the line impedance is getting smaller, the inrush current value that appears is getting bigger. And for the initial angle of the wave, when the angle is 0°, 180°, 360°, and their multiples will be the minimum value. Thus, the effective system design can be adjusted by combining the magnitude of the parameters by considering their effect on the inrush current, namely by maximizing the line impedance and shifting the starting angle to 0° or 180° or multiples thereof.
