Abstract

As one of the oldest ex-situ conservation institutions in Indonesia, Surabaya Zoo (KBS) plays a vital role in preserving biodiversity while serving as a recreational and educational facility for the public. Amid conservation efforts, public facilities such as the food court hold strategic potential as a medium for delivering consistent conservation messages to visitors. Currently, the food court functions merely as a dining and resting area without integration into the KBS conservation mission, resulting in suboptimal non-formal learning opportunities through spatial experiences. Through appropriate design integration, the dining area can transform from a simple resting place into an informal learning venue (free-choice learning) that strengthens public awareness regarding the importance of maintaining ecosystem balance for a diverse audience. This research focuses on the interior design innovation of the KBS food court using an Experiential Interpretive Learning Environment approach to create an educational and independently interactive atmosphere. By implementing Experience-Based Design (EBD), this design aims to enhance the visitors' multisensory experience while subtly integrating conservation narratives into the physical spatial elements. Through this approach, the KBS food court is expected to redirect children's attention away from gadget usage toward active interaction with their surroundings, provide restorative comfort for adult visitors, and reinforce the ecological values being conveyed. The Surabaya Zoo food court is an integral part of a tourist destination in a city recognized by UNICEF as a Child-Friendly City. The optimization of this public facility is directed toward providing a more immersive visiting experience, ensuring that conservation-related educational messages are optimally delivered to every segment of visitors.
